“I guess I just prefer to see

the

dark side

of things.

The glass is always half empty.

And cracked

.

And I just cut my lip on it.

And chipped a tooth.”

Although she entered the jazz

world as a pianist, Cristina Pato

came to prominence after she

picked up an instrument from

her childhood in Spain: the

bagpipe. Specifically the Gaita, a

version of the bagpipe from her

native region of Galicia. Though it

may seem an unusual instrument

for jazz, Pato has been able to use

it quite effectively, being hailed as

“one of the living masters of the

Gaita,” by

The Wall Street Journal

.

Cristina is also a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s

Silk Road Ensemble and has performed

on notable stages all over the world,

including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln

Center. Experience Cristina Pato’s

passion, energy, and powerful style

as she performs in Staller Center’s

Recital Hall.
